Mentors know from personal experience what it is like to be a new student!

 

They are friendly, helpful, approachable and available to you for support. Mentors help you feel confident, to fit in and to become part of the Curtin community. They can help you find your feet at Curtin so you can take the right steps towards study success. Your Mentor will make the transition a lot less daunting and take the stress out of starting Uni. He or she can answer practical questions related to your start at University such as:

 

  • Timetabling issues

  • How to submit assignments

  • Referencing issues

  • Managing the work load

  • Navigation around the Uni and the Library

  • How to use all of the sources of help.
     

They can give you tips about the course that you are studying and where it can lead you in the future.

Hello new students, welcome to Curtin Sarawak Campus! Thank you for your interest in visiting our START Mentoring Program website. As a new university student, you might have a lot of questions to ask - Where do I go to purchase my books ? What do I need to know? How do I submit my assignments? Who can I ask for help? Which tutorial class am I suppose to attend?

 

Curtin Sarawak START Mentoring Program is here to help you to successfully transition into our university.  PALs (Peer Advisory Leaders) or also known as Mentors will assist new-to-Curtin students become more acclimated to campus life.

 

PALs are dedicated to:

 

     1.  Assist you with your questions or doubts

     2.  Make a large campus feel smaller and  easier to navigate

     3.  Assist you to build relationship with communities within and outside the campus

     4.  Connect you to resources  - learning resources, sports resources and many more

     5.  Allow you to explore opportunities - volunteer opportunitie, leadership opportunity and so on

     6.  Share study skill tips and helping you to cope with academic matters

 

Although PALs are helping you with many other things, PALs are NOT expected :

 

    1.  To be your personal teacher/ tutor

    2.  To proofread your assignments

    3.  To solve all your problems

    4.  Or to be on call at all time

 

All new students are automatically registered under the Curtin START Mentoring Program. However, new students are given the option to request for a mentor OR choose not to have a mentor.  If you are interested to have a mentor, please fill in the application form below.

 

The Curtin Sarawak START Mentoring Program team would like to wish you good luck and hope you will have a great experience studying in Curtin Sarawak Campus. 

Gain from being a Mentee
How does it work?
  • A mentor will be assigned to you when you submit in your request by filling in the form below - each mentor has a small group of new students (termed ‘Mentees’)

  • Your mentor will contact you during or after the O-Week through an email

  • Your Mentor will be available to you throughout your first semester only

  • Contact may be face to face, by email or by phone 

If you would like to participate in the Mentor Program then there are some guidelines that you should follow. Our student mentors put in a lot of effort and assistance but you will only get the most from the experience if you participate too.

 

Having a mentor is a lot like a two-way street and to get the most from the program we recommend you do the following:

 

  • Communicate with and respond to your mentor

  • Take advantage of this source of help so ask questions, attend meetings and get involved

  • Be willing to act on your mentor’s advice and help yourself.

 

 

Expectations of you as a Mentee
What your mentor is not

Your mentor is like a guide who has walked the same path before but please remember:

 

  • They are not a private tutor

  • They are not a counsellor

  • They are not your representative for academic matters and disputes.

 

 

If you need specialist help your mentor will connect you to the right support service at the University. Alternatively, you can find more sources of help by visiting the University Life website
